"Manuelino" ArquitectureTorre de Belém - Lisboa

The Style manuelino, for times when was also called a Gothic late or flaming Portuguese, is an architectural style, scultóric and of movable art that was developed in the reign of D. Manuel I and continued after his death, though it was already existing from the reign of D. John II. It is a Portuguese variation of the Moorish-Portuguese Gothic end, as well as of the art or mudéjar, marked by a systematization of motives iconográficos own, far-reaching, symbolizing the royal power. It incorporated, later, ornamentations of the Italian Renaissance. The term " Manuelino " was created by Francisco Adolfo Varnhagen in his Historical Piece of news and Descriptiva of the Monastery of Belém, of 1842. The Style developed in a favorable time of the Portuguese economy and left marks in the whole national territory.

This artistic tendency was known, in the time, like the Portuguese variant of the architecture ad modum Yspaniae (to the Hispanic way) what, for his time, was included in the architectural current " to a modern one " - expression used for the late Gothic thing where there also was the variant, for example, in the turdesc or German way in then new Nordic architecture.

This current was opposed to the architecture to the ancient way or to a Roman.
In his set, somewhat changes relatively to the formal structure of Gothic German and plateresco. The lifted interior of the churches is maintained through the direction western-this, of the plant, of the systems of support and covering, of the calculation of proportions. The naves of the same height, influence of the churches-halls five-year-old Germans tramos, absence of transepto and rectangular heads are the principal differential characteristics. In spite of being essentially ornamental, the Manuelino is characterized also for the application of determined technical formulas of the height, like the vaults with ribs polinervadas from consoles.

In the civil compente the palaces stand out, like the Palace of D. Manuel, in Evora, and rural mansions, since the Mansion of Always Gets engaged, in Arraiolos, all of rectangular plant. And in the military tipologia bigger reference is the rampart of the Restelo, the Tower of Belém. First one of the ramparts of artillery of the country, breaking the tradition of the towers of donjon, his rectangular plant is put on top of a polyhedral base, which they penetrate Tagus inside. The rectangularidade of the plant objects to the curvilinear one of the sculpted decoration.
